This foot has a guide to the right. If you line up your fabric edge against this guide it will help you sew a perfect 1/4 inch seam or topstitching. The marking on the toe of the foot is there for keeping your perfect distance on a corner. Once the furthest line on the foot matches the edge of the fabric, leave the needle down, lift the foot, twist the fabric, then off you go again.
